Word of the Week

Good manners cost nothing but mean everything.

Since before Effy could talk, we would "ta" everything. And of course very quickly she cottoned on. Please and thankyou, a long with the sign for please have been her speciality for some time.

But with toddler stroppiness has come a forgetfulness, or her manners have become screaming "MEEEEEEEEEEASE" (please) at the top of her voice in a demanding fashion. Right now I can hear her having a fit downstairs because she's just shouting "MORE MILK! MORE MILK!" and not getting what she wants.

This week I have spent a lot of time explaining and encouraging her to stop, calm down and try "more milk please, daddy" or "Tissue, please" or "watch Peppa Pig please" and such.

I feel like a very polite broken record.

  2. Oh I'm with you on this one! Manners are so important and I know exactly what you mean about feeling like a very polite broken record. I'm sure this phase will pass and she'll get better at adding the pleases and thank yous

  4. Don't give up. I still subtly check with my children that they have remembered to thank someone. Maybe over the top, but its like every good habit. I tell them that a thank you is the way to let someone know that you like what they did. They might do it agian, if you're lucky. Must be doing something right, as I've always had comments from parents that my children are so polite when they go for play dates. I'd be mortified otherwise.

  7. I was so proud when my son would always these magic words but lately he skips using them so I have to restart giving emphasis on them again so that he would remember using them =) #wotw

  9. As so many have said, I find the lack of manners in adults quite appalling so am very strict with my two about remembering them. Although my pre-schooler is rather prone to forgetting hers most of the time still as she demands I do things for her!
